An Interesting Idea?

Hello Ladies,

I've been kicking this idea around for almost a year now, but I've decided that I would like to actually attempt to make it a reality.

I want to make a Lolita themed Tarot Deck. I am quite familiar with Tarot decks, (I own at least 6 of them,) and I do practice reading them. (I am really accurate too, if I may say so myself.) I am not trivializing the Tarot in attempting this. I believe that part of the wonder of the Tarot is the wonderful art that the cards have.

I think that parts of the Lolita aesthetic could fit this quite nicely. I even have some bits of it figured out already. The suits would each feature a different style of Loli (see below for details) and i have a bit of a story worked out for the Major Arcana. But what I am stuck with are details.

Mainly, I am looking for suggestions, comments, etc on what you think of this idea. I plan on eventually photographing and perhaps publishing this deck. Details on those shoots will be worked out later, for those of you in/around NY who might be interested.

Here is what I have so far:

Minor Arcana:

Pentacles (Earth)- Classic Loli. Aristo King and Queen. Pentacles would be represented by coins.

Chalices (Water)- Sailor Not sure how to do king/queen. Chalices represented by teacups.

Swords (Fire)- Pirate/ Gothic Loli. They're the only ones who I might see using swords.

Wands (Air)- Sweet. Hime queen. Parasols would replace wands.

Minor Arcana:

The fool would start out as an ita, and follow the various trials and tribulations in becoming a "true" Loli. More detail needs to be worked out, and I am open to suggestion.

Also, please do not steal my idea. Though I may not have anything concrete to show for it yet, a lot of work and thought has gone into this already. Thank you!

So, what do you think?

XD I had this idea a couple years ago, but I didn't think of using photography! Haha I thought of illustrating a whole deck, and then gave up because I can't draw XD So I would love to see this become real!

For Chalices maybe King and Queen can be Pirate lords? Or a Ship Captain?

Anyway, I think it is a great idea :) Just make sure that each card looks distinctly different, so it may take a long time! And you would probably need a LOT of models/outfits because it would be lame to have the same few models on every card =__= Are you going to allow worldwide photos? That could make for a really interesting deck because the scenery would be different :3 Or each suit could also be represented by its season of the year?

I think each suit will also be represented by its season.

I had thought of an illustrated one too, but I can't draw either.

I do want all of the cards different. they have to be, as they are telling a story.

Unfortunately, I don't think I will make this a world wide thing, at least not at first. I'm really picky about my projects, and I have very specific ideas in mind. Also, I kind of want everything to be in the same style.

I live in the NY area, and I am a seamstress. I plan on doing some shoots in the city, and possibly using other events, like cons and Sakura Matsuri to get models. I and those who help me will style every one (unless they are good with coords), so there will be no itas.

I think I covered everything. I hope I don't sound too much like I don't like your ideas. I really like them, but I lack the resources. Thank you for your input!

Nah, I understand about being picky about the consistency of style ;)

Are you going to keep the symbolism in the cards though? Like the Fool's white rose and traveling bag, spilled cups, etc.? I really like Raider-Waite deck for the symbolism even though its not as pretty, though I have collected some decks simply because they were pretty, though lacking in depth of meaning ^^;

Anyway, have fun with your project! I can't wait to see results :)

i have 6 decks and six different sets of imagry. I havent seen a white rose on any of the decks I have... cups might spill, but that is the nature of cups. The fool will definately have a bag though...

thank you! I really appreciate your input!

Oh in one of the decks I have the Fool is holding a white rose (for the naivety and innocence I think... *fails at Tarot*) and Death carries a flag with a large white rose, but I actually forgot what it was for =___=;; And I forgot which card it was that was all the cups spilled on the floor (I left all my decks in America so I can't go look it up! Haha sorry!) that represented loss or misfortune I think?

mm. like i said, they all have different symbologies to them.

I'm going to try to get as much meaning as i can in the photos, but I also need to make sure the story gets through... dang, no wonder this has taken so long to get off of the ground!

You can do it!! :D I just meant that I hope it will contain symbolism rather than just be pretty pictures ;) I was trying to give examples, but quite obviously failed T^T Are you going to make this a printed, buyable deck? *u*

yes, that is the goal. I want this to be commercially availble. if not, i'll try to find a good, cheap printer and i'll sell them myself.

maybe the fool shouldn't be an ita per se. We start out as girls wearing normal fashion. So maybe have a girl completely out of lolita, or loliable clothes. Afterall the first couple cards (7?) are the fool going on a journey and meeting/learning from the forces of the universe (emperor, empress, hierophant, etx.) to eventually gain some understanding of the material world (chariot), or in this case the lolita world.

something to think about

I love this idea. You may want to look up the Jane Austen Tarot (which always struck me as a very loli-able deck) or the Whimsical Tarot for other ideas.

I agree with the person above on the Fool. I'd honestly make the Ita card be the Tower (disasters, of course) or else make the Tower a mountain of sewing materials and shopping bags from brand places slowly tipping over on to a rather panicked group of people.

Were you planning on incorporating the Happy Squirrel?

Thank you! I have kinda stalled on it...(School)but the thoughts are still floating around in the massive expanse of empty space that I call my mind.

Another interesting interpretation. Why sewing/shopping for the tower, other than the obvious mound connection?

I haven't yet heard of the Happy Squirrel. Care to explain?

The Tower: overdoing it leading to a total loss of control and finally, your happy dreams come crashing down.

The Happy Squirrel is a joke from the Simpsons that a lot of newer Tarot designers have embraced, purely for poo and giggles. Apparently, the interpretation is subject to the whims of the designer and the reader.

Ah, I see the Tower connection now. Thats a very good idea! I'll hve to keep that in consideration.

The Happy Squirrell card is an interesting one, but I doubt I'll include it in my deck.
